What is ArteFill
ArteFill is the first - and currently only - FDA-approved long lasting -
and in many cases even permanent - injectable facial filler. It has been
approved for use in the United State in 2007 but it has over 10 years of
history in Europe and Canada where its somewhat simpler version (Artecoll)
has been used successfully in over 400,000 patients.
FDA has approved ArteFill for use on "smile lines". It is being used also
for non-surgical rhinoplasty, to augment lips and erase wrinkles. ArteFill
is inappropriate for wrinkle treatment in areas where the facial skin is
particularly thin, i.e. for the treatment of crow’s feet.
ArteFill is a gel that consists of the actual facial filler and anesthetic
(lidocaine) which means that the injectable not only fulfills its promise
in terms of the effect it achieves, but makes the injection itself more
comfortable to the patient. The active part of the gel is made of millions
of synthetic micro-particles dispersed in cow’s (bovine) collagen.
What ArteFill Does
ArteFill is injected under a wrinkle to create a permanent, smooth support
under it. Because the PMMA microspheres are synthetic and can’t be
absorbed by the body they not only last longer than any other facial
filler known to date but cause the body to encapsulate each of them with
its own collagen. Here is what happens: the bovine collagen in which the
synthetic microspheres are suspended gets absorbed by the body. As it
does, the increased collagen production of the patient’s own body
compensates for it, the final outcome is a filler that consists of 80% of
the patient’s own collagen and only 20% of the synthetic material.
Who Should and Who Shouldn’t Get ArteFill Treatment?
ArteFill is a great treatment for people who tried other injectables
and are ready for improvements that involve a few treatments and last for
a long time, and in some cases forever. (The benefits include not only
permanent results but fewer treatments and a lower overall cost as
compared to temporary injectables.)
ArteFill can’t be used in patients who have chronic skin infections or are
allergic to bovine collagen.
What to Expect Before and During ArteFill Treatment?
For safety reasons, Dr. Bahari will test you for an allergy to bovine
collagen. This test is administered 30 days before the planned treatment.
ArteFill treatment itself usually takes 15-20 minutes. In most cases,
an experienced doctor - like Dr. Bahari - will recommend two or even three treatments to achieve
the best cosmetic results.
Possible Side Effects of ArteFill
Side effects of ArteFill are usually temporary and rare. Sensitivity and
redness at the injection site may occur. A temporary feeling of lumpiness
or firmness which resolves over time may be experienced by some patients.
