Fractional CO2 Laser is used to reduce the appearance of scars left behind by severe acne.

Obviously, like any other disease, acne should be treated as soon as the first symptoms appear to prevent it from becoming a problem and / or causing scars. (Yes, in acne treatment too prevention and prompt attention are the key!) Such an early treatment is the easiest, most effective and inexpensive. Acne becomes a serious problem once it's been allowed to go untreated and caused extensive - and unsightly! - scarring.

Fractional CO2 laser is the gold standard in treatment of acne scars. The procedure is relatively new technology that provides the best results in improving the appearance of acne scars. Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing procedure, targets only a portion of the entire skin during the  treatment, allowing for faster recovery and effective removal of acne scars. It smoothes out the texture and evens out the tone of the skin.

Fractional CO2 laser skin resurfacing is recommended for treatment of deeper acne scars (indentations) in the skin. Fractional CO2 laser uses ablative microbeams of laser light to produce a controlled, planned, and very limited "injury" to the skin. As a result of this controlled "injury", the skin will re-grow clearer and smoother. Usually, a single treatment with Fractional CO2 laser produces significant improvements.

Post treatment, you will experience a few days of mild swelling and redness with some peeling of the skin. In most people the skin returns to normal within five days. One to two treatments are usually enough to address most acne scarring. Significant improvements are visible after each treatment. Dr Bahari will discuss the optimal number and interval of treatments based on your skin's analysis.

Fraxel Laser is also used in treatment of acne scars.

Fraxel laser is gentler and that's why several treatments (usually spaced a few weeks apart) are  required. In very general terms: during the treatment microbeams of laser bypass the top layer of the skin and penetrate down to its deeper layers super heating the skin stimulating the tissue to rebuild itself from inside out. Each treatment is followed by mild peeling as the new skin replaces the old, scarred one. After several treatments which increase the skin's renewal rate the skin re-grows much smoother and in many cases unblemished.

The Fraxel is not as intense as the Fractional CO2 , therefore more treatment sessions are necessary for significant improvement in the patient's acne scars. Depending on the severity of acne scars, up to five sessions of Fraxel laser treatments may be needed to achieve best results. Downtime post-Fraxel laser treatment is minimal as compared to Fractional CO2. Usually one day of sunburn-like redness with some mild swelling under the eyes. Frequently, patients choose Fraxel over Fractional CO2 because of its lower cost per session and the significantly shorter downtime. (Fraxel laser's patients can have a treatment on Friday and be at work on Monday without any noticeable redness or swelling.)
